Memorial Day is right around the corner, which means the Hamptons social scene will be in full swing. Whether you’ll be attending an upscale cocktail party or a fancy fundraiser, there are some simple, but important, guidelines to follow. If you want to fit in among the elite — including so many celebs – here are some tips! Get your wedges and maxi dresses ready ladies, it’s time to head “Out East”!

Invite Only Means Invite Only – Many parties with the upper echelon require an invitation and response from the host. If you aren’t invited, save yourself the trip and the embarrassment because if you aren’t on the list, you aren’t getting in.

20-Somethings, Inquire about Junior Tickets – While expensive, fundraisers are a great way to enjoy an upscale Hamptons’ soiree while helping a good cause. If you’re a 20-something, or even an early 30 something ask about “junior” tickets, which are less pricey. Ages for junior tickets range from event to event, so call ahead and ask.

Eat Prior to the Event – In the Hamptons world, expensive doesn’t always equate with a hearty meal. At a lot of parties, drinks are accompanied by light appetizers and fancy finger food. My suggestion — eat something before the party to avoid being hungry during the event… and open bar on an empty stomach!

Wear Wedges – Most cocktail parties are held outside, in the grass. If golf carts aren’t arranged, you could be in for a long walk. Ladies, even though you might love those heels with your outfit, I advise you to put them back in the closet! Wedges are a great way to stay upscale without digging your heels into the dirt or, even worse, falling flat on your face!

Wear Bug Spray and Sun Block- Like I said, most parties are held outside on a lawn. Bug spray is a must if you don’t want to be eaten alive. Don’t forget your sun block either, especially for outdoor parties without a tent. Even though parties are hosted at private homes, it’s rare that you are actually ever see the inside of the house.

Be Aware of the Dress Code- The Hamptons are full of fun theme parties, which range from color coordination to the roaring twenties. Read all of the details and be aware of the theme. You don’t want to show up to this year’s gathering in last year’s attire.

Consider an Up-do – For the most part, Hamptons shindigs are held in the late afternoon and early evening. Ladies, take it from me, it gets hot! Hair on the back of your neck all afternoon can be uncomfortable and unattractive. Consider a bun or fun up-do to avoid overheating.

Leave Time for Travel – There are no secret shortcuts out east anymore. If you don’t want to be late, map out your route of choice and leave plenty of time for travel.

Dress the Part – Yes, Hamptons events are upscale; however, they don’t require the same attire as a New York City function. Think of it more as “beach chic.”

Plan Ahead – Calling the Hamptons busy in the summer season is an understatement. If you plan on having dinner after an event, be sure to make a reservation. Plan your day out ahead of time to avoid any unwanted time restrictions. Bring cash for valet tips. And don’t forget a designated driver.
